Bickleton falls to Trout Lake and top-ranked Sunnyside Christian

January 24, 2018

The Bickleton Pirates faced a couple of big Greater Columbia Gorge League tests in Trout Lake and Sunnyside Christian over the weekend, doing so without big man Cody Strader, who’s missed the last couple of games.

The Pirates dropped a 63-21 contest to the Mustangs at home on Friday before falling 70-23 to the Knights a day later in Sunnyside.

The hot shooting Mustangs, much improved from the year before, had four players finish with double figures in points and combined for nine 3-pointers against the Pirates.

On Saturday, they took the court against the No. 1 ranked Class 1B school, the Sunnyside Christian Knights, according to the WIAA RPI Rankings. The Knights sit at 14-1 overall and 5-0 in league play, with their only loss coming to the Class 1A top-ranked team, Lynden Christian.

After going winless in GCGL play last season and finishing with just three wins last season, the Mustangs are up to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play with two losses to Sunnyside Christian and one loss to Yakama Tribal, with three games left on the conference slate.

Friday

The Pirates trailed the Mustangs just 26-15 at halftime during Friday’s GCGL contest in Bickleton, but a big third quarter rally propelled the Mustangs to the win.

Trout Lake held the Pirates off the scoreboard in the third quarter, and outscored them 37-6 in the second half to cruise to the win.

The Mustangs did a good job of containing scoring machine Cesareo Arriaga, who finished with nine points. He had a big night on the glass, securing 18 rebounds. Sophomore Dakota Riggs hit some shots early and paced the Pirates with 10 points while also grabbing four boards.

Saturday

The Pirates faced a mountain of a test Saturday against the No. 1 ranked Knights, who held the road team to just two points in the first half.

In their first seven GCGL contests, the Knights are holding teams to just 34 points per game while they have scored over 80 points in four of the seven league games.

They had no trouble putting up points early against the Pirates, scoring 32 in the first eight minutes and going into halftime leading 55-2.

Junior Cesaareo Arriaga scored the lone basket for the Pirates in the first half, and finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Riggs and eighth grader John Cardenas were the only other Pirates to score, combining for six points.

Freshman Christian Arriaga didn’t score, but handed out two assists while he, and sophomore Scott McBride grabbed four boards each.
