Senior Shakira Kelly, shown against Goldendale on Dec. 20, scored a team-high 11 points in the team's loss to DeSales on Feb. 6.

Both the Lyle-Wishram Cougars boys and girls basketball seasons ended on the road Friday one game shy of reaching the District 5/6 Tournaments and continuing their seasons.

The boys dropped a 64-51 contest to the White Swan Cougars on Tuesday in White Swan after they were outscored 42-31 throughout the second half. The girls season concluded with Tuesday's 56-15 loss to DeSales.

Both teams, who competed in the Greater Columbia Gorge League for the second straight season after moving up to the Class 2B ranks, took the court against the No. 6 finishing team from the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference.

The boys, as they had struggled with at times throughout the season, got off to a slow start, scoring just 20 points in the first two quarters. They also did a good job of slowing down White Swan's offense early, and trailed just 22-20 at the half.

The Cougars picked up their scoring after the break, but so did the White Swan Cougars.

Leading 40-34, White Swan struck for 24 points over the final eight minutes that cut off any chance for a Lyle-Wishram comeback.

The Lyle-Wishram girls took the court against the 10-13 overall DeSales Irish in their play-in game last Tuesday, but the Irish were too tough on their home court, winning 56-15.

DeSales jumped ahead big early, holding the Cougs to a free throw in the first quarter and leading 36-9 at halftime.
