Fire Victims Fund holds auction and yard sale

The 23 Annual Klickitat Valley Fire Victims Fund is scheduled for May 11 and 12. A yard sale and live and silent auctions will be held to generate funds to support victims of fire disasters in the Goldendale, Centerville, and Rural 7 areas in preparation for the upcoming fire season.

The yard sale will start at 4 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. on Friday, May 11 and begin again at 8:30 a.m. the next day. Yard sale items will consist of donations from the community with a wide variety of things to choose from.

The silent auction will also begin at 8:30 a.m. on May 12 and run until 1 p.m. Bidding will be for gift certificates from local businesses. The live auction will begin at 10 a.m. and items up for bidding will be various vehicles of utility trucks, tractors, trailers, generators, and expensive hand tools. KPUD has donated several old utility trucks that are no longer in service. Food vendors will be on site, and cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted.

Fire Chief for Rural 7 Anthony Browning says the proceeds from these funds help people get stable after losing their homes to a structure fire or if their homes are consumed by a wildfire.

“When someone losing everything in a fire we have the ability to write them a check on the spot to help them find a motel, buy some clothes, or get some food, to get past the first few days of a disaster,” Browning says.

Browning says the funds are established in one pool of money to draw from that helps victims in the Goldendale, Centerville and Rural 7 areas. He hopes to get anywhere between $14,000 and $18,000 from the fundraiser.

“Our guys are working hard to put this together, and it is something that benefits the community,” Browning says. “People are always shocked and surprised when we just cut them a check as their house is burning. It really helps them out.”

Donations to fundraiser will be taken right up to the day of the event and will be held at 327 W Brooks St. in Goldendale. Items can be dropped off anytime Monday thru Friday. For more information, call Rural 7 at 773-4246.
