Just a reminder: there will be intermittent, single-lane closures of the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, March 22 through April 2, for semi-annual maintenance and repair welding to the steel grate bridge deck. And The Dalles bridge is taking this time to follow suit and do their own repairs with signs posted with times and dates.

If you are a healthy individual and wish to give something back, our local Klickitat County Search and Rescue (KCS&R) and Fire Department No. 4 is asking for volunteers. And right now the Dallesport/Murdock fire department is asking if you have a vehicle (with the title), you could donate to use as training in their vehicle extractions class between now and April 1. (Hope that isn’t an April Fool’s joke.)

It seems there were two vehicle accidents this past weekend, and if I understand correctly, it occurred near the parking areas where hikers leave their vehicles; one for sure was near Rowland Lake. Over-parking of vehicles make it necessary to be extra cautious around those places such as Rowland Lake, the intersection of Old Highway 8 and State Highway 14, Catherine Creek, (on Old Highway 8) and the large parking space just east of our tunnels.

Howard’s Haven Animal Sanctuary is hosting an Easter Fun Day on April 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is free but by appointment only by calling (541) 705-7073. When calling to make your appointment, you will be given information to their location. There will be an Easter Egg Hunt as well as a chance for the kids to connect with many animals on the ranch.

Our High Prairian neighbors are ready to put together the spring edition to their newsletter and wish you all to check and see if “you'll be inspired to share your gardening expertise, write or find spring poems, send in photos of spring flowers or other sights, dust off your favorite recipe, write an article about a subject worth knowing more about, or whatever else strikes your fancy.” Their deadline for submissions is Saturday, April 10. That's a little over two weeks from now. Send your submissions or any questions to: pgwenberry@hotmail.com; or call Gwen at (509) 281-1998. If you are interested in receiving the newsletter, let them know when you call.

Hearts and condolences go out to the Pinell and Brashers families in the loss of Mike Pinell. His parents, Joe and Alice Pinell, were one of the pioneer families in our area. At the age of 66, he succumbed to a short battle with pneumonia. His memorial is yet to be determined.

Can I hear an “Atta Boy” for all our PUD workers? The brief outage during the evening of Sunday the 28th illustrated how quick and efficient they are at their job. I believe they need a standing ovation for their fast and dedicated work ethics! A call to the office with a big “Thank You” might be appreciated.
