Klickitat County Sheriff Bob Songer stated Wednesday that he considers Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s newest orders restricting activities unconstitutional and illegal. He stated his deputies will not enforce the orders, issued this week in regard to COVID-19.

In a statement released this afternoon, Songer said, “To all citizens of Klickitat County: as your Sheriff, my position has not changed in regard to the enforcement of Gov. Inslee’s illegal and unconstitutional orders…

Inslee issued new COVID restriction beginning Nov. 16 at 11:59 p.m. and remaining in effect until Monday, Dec. 14. However, the modified restrictions of restaurants took effect today, Nov. 18, at 12:01 a.m.

“My deputies will not be enforcing mask wearing, indoor social gatherings, outdoor social gatherings, religious services, wedding and funeral gatherings, or the restrictions of restaurant and bars, along with other businesses that fall under Gov. Inslee’s most recent COVID-19 restrictions,” Songer’s statement added.

“If the citizens and business owners of Klickitat County choose to follow Gov. Inslee’s COVID-19 restrictions, that is their right to do so,” Songer said. “However, if the citizens and business owners of Klickitat County choose not to follow Gov. Inslee’s COVID-19 restrictions, that is their constitutional right to do so.”

Songer concluded by stating that if business owners feel they are being harassed by L&I agents or the Washington State Liquor & Cannabis Agents, they should call him (509) 261-1833.
