Jean Allyn Smeltzer was born on Feb. 10, 1936, in Goldendale. She was the eldest child of Cecil Virgil and Frances Louise (Korthase) Allyn. Most of her childhood was spent in Goldendale, where she attended school and was involved in 4-H and Rainbow Girls. After graduating high school in 1954, Jean worked at the National Bank of Commerce.

She met Roy Smeltzer on a blind date, and the couple were later married. After moving to Portland, Jean became a Bluebird and Campfire leader. She joined the Genealogical Forum of Portland in 1967, which launched her lifelong love of genealogy. Jean wrote many books about her family and Klickitat County history. She was a member of the Klickitat County Historical Society writing many articles for their publications. She also wrote “Looking Back” for The Goldendale Sentinel from 2010 to 2016.

Jean was an avid gardener belonging to several iris societies, donating plants to the Goldendale Soroptimists and Historical Preservation Society as well as giving them to anyone who asked.

Jean passed away Oct. 31, 2020, at her home in Goldendale after a short battle with breast cancer. At her request, no service will be held.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy. Surviving are: children, Larry Smeltzer, Marcus, Washington, and Sherrill Basse (Dean), Goldendale; grandchildren, Keith Smeltzer, The Dalles; Elizabeth Puckett, Tacoma; Brandon Basse, Kyle, Texas, Lauren Ebalo, Fullerton, California; and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings Joan Telford, Marjorie LaFond, and Jim Allyn, all of Goldendale.
