Clarifying Ecology's role

To the Editor:

In the Dec. 15, 2010 edition of The Sentinel, Representative Bruce Chandler, R-15th District, was quoted as saying, "The Department of Ecology alone accounts for about half of the 600 new pieces of legislation enacted by the state each year." I am writing to set this record straight.

Each year, the Department of Ecology works with the governor and legislature to identify legislative actions that are needed to help Ecology carry out its responsibilities for protecting the environment, human health, and communities by preventing and cleaning up pollution.
