KCSO and SAR locate, rescue missing hunter


On Oct. 26 at approximately 12:20 p.m., the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) received a call of an overdue hunter in the Swale Canyon area, later determined to be 50-year-old Gary Vaughn. He was reported to have been last seen around 4:30 p.m. the previous day.

KCSO deputies and Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers responded to the scene, initiated ground search operations, and requested aircraft assistance from the Hood River County Sheriff. Within moments, the SAR man-tracking team located Vaughn’s boot prints and he was quickly located and found to have tumbled down a steep incline sustaining numerous injuries, including a possible back injury.
