Pirates win District team trophy send seven runners to State

TIGHT RACE: Michael Hickman (left), Dusty Bender and Peter Clinton (right), were even about half-way through the three mile race. Clinton would go on to finish third with Hickman in fourth and Bender in fifth at the 1B/2B District race.

A decision by Peter Clinton to skip football at Mabton this year and turn out for cross-country made a world of difference for the Bickleton junior’s post-season plans. It also had a huge impact on the rest of the Pirate cross-country team. Bickleton won the combined District 5/6 team title for 1B/2B schools, last Friday at Apple Ridge Run at Cowiche.

Clinton, a junior, played football at Mabton the past two years. The Vikings finished their 0-9 season last Friday and Clinton could have ended his season with them. Instead, he chose to run.
