Dear Veterans,

I see you.

I see you pumping gas at the gas station in the pouring rain, your head protected by a cap embroidered with “World War II.”

I see you tenderly holding the elbow of your spouse while the two of you walk into the grocery store; your unhurried, determined pace tells me that life has taught you the value of every step, every minute, spent with a loved one. I see you having coffee once a week at the restaurant down the street with your buddies, laughing at each other’s best fishing stories.

And each time I see you, I know what I need to do. I ask, “Are you a veteran?”

You answer in a quiet manner. “Yes, ma’am, I am.”
