New rabies law takes effect

With the New Year comes a new state law that started Jan. 1, which mandates that all pet dogs, cats, and ferrets are up to date on their rabies vaccines.

According to a press release from the Washington State Department of Health, vaccinations have never been mandated by the state. Some cities and counties, however, have their own rules.

The city of Goldendale requires that all dog owners within the city limits acquire a dog license and in order to do so, they must show proof of a current rabies vaccine for their pet.

Klickitat County does not require any pet licensing and therefore, up until Jan. 1, did not require any vaccinations for domestic dogs, cats or ferrets.
