The see-sawing sensibilities of a central moral issue

The governor has proposed a law for Washington State recognizing same-sex marriages, and a campaign for an initiative has been launched in the state that would define marriage as being only between a man and a woman. Clearly the issue is polarizing. One camp recites the common mantra of the day (specifically: as time goes on, morality “matures” out of its restrictive past). The other says that as time goes on, people’s sense of moral center tends to corrupt and devolve to lowest common denominators. One claims to be progressive, the other to be a clear center unobstructed by faddish and ill-considered cultural preferences.
