Solid defense earns Lady Wolves a win in opener and split with River View

WORKING ON THE BASICS: Softball manager Lance DenBoer puts the team through a ground ball drill. The Lady Timberwolves used those basic skills to hold down the errors and defeat River View in their opening game.

The Lady Timberwolves finally got the best of River View’s Haley Hess, winning the season opener in Goldendale 3-2. Hess was in a pitching duel with Goldendale’s Haley Hoffman for the first four, scoreless innings. River View scored in the fifth inning, but errors proved costly to the Panthers who gave up three runs, only one of them earned, in the Timberwolves half of the fifth inning. Sarah Henderson was 2-2 in the game with an RBI and run scored. Allison Hutchins and Crysta Counts scored Goldendale’s other two runs. Hoffman gave up another run in the seventh, but struck out the final batter to win the game. Hoffman gave up just three hits and struck out seven batters. Hess gave u...
