Obituary

 

Garland R. Mabe, 74, died May 22,2012, at his home in Goldendale, Washington. A memorial service was held Monday, May 28, at Community Grace Brethren Church in Goldendale.

Garland was born July 31, 1937 in Peters Creek, North Carolina to Emmett and Hallie Lee Mabe. He grew up in North Carolina and Vancouver, Washington, graduating from Fort Vancouver High School in 1956. He went on to serve as a medic in the United States Air Force and saw duty in the Vietnam War.

Garland spent time in the 1960’s as a professional bull rider and went on to have a 30- year career working in the Crown Zellerbach and Fiberweb facilities in  Washougal, Washington. He was active in the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers Union Local 5 during his time there.

Garland married his wife Connie on March 31, 1995 in Vancouver, Washington.  They moved to Goldendale, Washington in 1998 to retire on property they had purchased there. Garland and Connie were active in the Goldendale community through Community Grace Brethren Church, Goldendale Motorsports Association, Goldendale Christian School, and the Goldendale School District. His interests included horses, country music, old Western movies and television, firearms, guitars and other stringed instruments, restoring old cars, and buying and selling just about anything. Garland had a special place in his heart for children and his grandchildren in particular. His love for and pride in his family was clear to all who knew him.

Garland is survived by his wife Connie Mabe of Goldendale, stepson Keith Bundy and his wife Becky (Ridgefield, WA), stepdaughter Cheryl Worthington and her husband Donnie (Vancouver, WA), brothers Allan Mabe (Springfield, OR) and Tommy Mabe (Henderson, NV), and grandchildren Ryan and Rachel Mabe and Nathanael and Matthias Bundy.

Garland was preceded in death by his brother James Mabe and son Garland Mabe, Jr.
