13 Miles of Yard Sales still on this weekend

Despite having no central organizer this year, the 13+ Miles of Yard Sales event seems to be going forward anyway.

This weekend, June 9 & 10, many 13-Mile sellers will be open for business as planned. Among them is the High Prairie community northeast of Lyle, whose giant annual Firehouse Sale was held last month.

After meeting with Joy Collins, the force behind the 13-Mile event for the past nine years, High Prairie has decided to re-open for the 13 Mile Sale as usual. Both the 130-family yard sale and the popular food booth will be open for business, at 783 Centerville Highway.

Collins explained last week that the 13 Mile Yard Sale began as a collaboration between the towns of Lyle and Klickitat, which sit 13 miles apart—hence the name. As it grew, however, the behind-the-scenes work became too much for one person, and she wasn’t able to find volunteers to step in. Although she couldn’t take on the organizing this year, she said she is encouraged that so many people are having their sales anyway. She’ll be participating in another way this year, working in the sale booth set up by the Twin Bridges Museum at the picnic shelter in Lyle.

Everyone is expecting that buyers will turn out with the same enthusiasm as the sellers. The Greater Goldendale Chamber of Commerce has volunteered to take information from sellers who will be open this weekend and has the list available for anyone who calls. Interested participants can call the Chamber at 773-3400.
