Lyle school district seeking to rescind new levy

First told third levy was legal, the district now finds it could lose equalization funds


With the prospects of having to balance a budget that is seriously in debt, Lyle School District is now facing more financial woes as they attempt to stop a levy from appearing on the Aug. 7 ballot.

At last week’s school board meeting, a letter from the state Office of Public Instruction (OPI) relayed the opinion of the state Attorney General’s office that a third levy in one calendar year would be illegal. The letter went on to suggest that if Lyle school district runs the levy, OPI may not be able to distribute equalization funds. Equalization funds are distributed to school districts that have low property valuation, but only if they pass a local levy.
