Teen gives thanks to river rescuers

A successful rescue of five people from the Klickitat River last week was applauded by a number of Goldendale Sentinel readers. Among the comments received on the Facebook page were “big thank yous to all who helped us,” from Katlynn Godwin, one of the girls helped from the river by Alan Cootes. Godwin went on to say “I have to say if it weren’t for Alan and his wife, none of us would be here to talk about it today.”

The truth of that statement was made by the comment on the web page from Michael Wellman who said: “I am so please these young people survived. Eighteen years ago my 18 year old son Nathan Wellman drowned in this same stretch.” Wellman noted that signs were put up after that incident but he suggested more and better signage needs to be in place.

The mother of Graysen Smith reported that the cut above her daughter’s eye required 10 stitches and she sustained a concussion. Other than bumps and scrapes, all five are reported in good physical condition.

Others had praise for the team that tended to Smith and pulled her out of the Gorge, which included Klickitat County Search and Rescue, Klickitat County Sheriff’s Department and Lyle Fire and Safety personnel
