Extension on sturgeon retention deadline

The retention period for legal sized white sturgeon has been extended beyond the scheduled July 31 closure date, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Citing counts that show 140 of the 300 fish allowed to be harvested have yet to be taken.

The order applies to the Columbia River and its tributaries from The Dalles Dam upstream to John Day Dam. Fishing is open daily through Aug. 4. Beginning Aug. 5, retention will be allowed only on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until further notice.
