George Hathaway



George Albert Hathaway Sr. 87 passed away at his home surrounded by his children on August 1, 2012.

Born on May 25, 1925 in Wilder, ID to Maurice K Hathaway and Piccola Castle Hathaway.

While George’s father worked away from their homestead George and his brothers took care of the farm. George also worked for other farmers in Glenwood for $1 a day.

In 1944 George was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the 739th Military Police Battalion. While stationed in the Philippines for two years, he served as part of General MacArthur’s Honor Guard.

In 1947 George started farming with his dad. George’s dad gave him 40 head of cattle to start his farming production. Over the years he slowly increased his herd.. He calved year around, and raised a commercial herd.

He was united in marriage to Dee M. Dencer Watt, on February 28, 1954, in Glenwood, Washington. Their first child Melvin was born Feb 1955, second Joanne, April 1956, third Darlene, Dec. 1957 and George Jr. was born June 1959.

In 1970 he started growing certified seed potatoes.

In 1980 George asked his son George Hathaway Jr. to join him in the farming operation, they have been farming together ever since.

Over the Years George had many accomplishments, here are just a few

• Member of Truth Tabernacle Church

• 4-H Sheep Leader (all of his children were involved with 4-H)

• Federal Land Bank Director for 25 years

• Hell Roaring Ditch Director for more years than he could remember

• School Board Director at Glenwood School

• Head Fire Commissioner and volunteer Fireman

Klickitat County Planning Commission, Klickitat County Weed Board, several years on Community Council.

• 1991 Klickitat County Cattleman of the Year

George is survived by wife: Dee Hathaway, children: Sandy Hamilton – Jefferson, OR, Melvin Hathaway (Laura) – North Las Vegas, NV, Joanne Hathaway – Roe – Glenwood, WA, Darlene Hathaway Schrank (Bill) - Benton City, WA and George Hathaway Jr (Tammy) - Glenwood, WA and 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren, his sister Catherine Hathaway Waller, and brother Ray Hathaway.

He is preceded in death by his father Maurice K Hathaway, mother Piccola Castle Hathaway, brother Kenneth Hathaway, brother Maurice K Hathaway Jr, sister Nellie Hathaway Smith, and brother Baby Hathaway.

The Lord has blessed George over the years, he had a relationship with the Lord, a man who loved God and prayed to Him. He worked hard and was dedicated to his Lord, family, church, and friends.

When George stood up to publicly praise the Lord he would always say, “I would like to thank the Lord for the days he gives me” and many times he would also say “I like to thank Him that I can work another day”.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the White Salmon Hospital for all they did for our father. The care our Dad received from the White Salmon Hospital was amazing. The family will never forget.

His service was held at the Truth Tabernacle Church in Hood River Or e.,on August 4, 2012. Grave side service was in Glenwood Cemetery with dinner at the Glenwood School.

Dad, we will miss you always until we see you again. We love you with all our hearts.
