Frederic Charles Hoctor, Jr.



Frederic Charles Hoctor, Jr. was born April 17, 1940, in Goldendale to Neva Lois (Spalding) and Frederic Charles Hoctor, Sr.

“Freddy” graduated from Goldendale High School in 1958 and attended the University of Portland for two years before transferring to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, where he graduated in 1969. Fred earned a Master’s degree in education from the University of Portland and taught seventh and eighth grade English and history for 28 years at Whittier Middle School in the Portland School District. After retiring in 1998, Fred worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and as a court reporter. In February of 2007, Fred moved back to Goldendale. He enjoyed stamp collecting, shooting pool and playing pinochle and rummy as well as taking water aerobics classes at Water’s Edge in The Dalles.

A lover of all kinds of music, Fred liked putting albums on tape, amassing a collection of more than 1,000 tapes. He loved reading, particularly history books, and was an avid patron of the Goldendale library. Fred was a member of the local United Unitarian Church. His dog, Cotton, was a dear friend and companion.

“Freddy” passed away in The Dalles on Aug. 19 at the age of 72. He is survived by his sisters Patricia Padilla of San Antonio, Texas; Susan Bee and Linda Amidon (husband Charles) both of Goldendale; brother Michael Hoctor (wife Georganne) of San Diego, Calif .; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel handled cremation arrangements. An informal memorial gathering and celebration of Fred’s life will be held at 501 E Collins Drive, Goldendale, on Friday, Aug. 31 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
