Marion Alice McCardell

Longtime Goldendale resident Marion Alice McCardell passed away peacefully, surrounded by her four loving daughters and her beloved husband of 67 years, on Aug. 24, at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Ore.

Marion was born on Nov. 27, 1925, to Roy and Margaret Beers in Yakima. She spent her younger years moving with her family from place to place, due to Roy’s employment as a truck driver. They finally settled in Goldendale during her high school years. It was during those years that she met John William (Bill) McCardell. The high school sweethearts were wed on Sept. 8, 1945.

When Bill was deployed to Pensacola, Fla., after basic training, Marion followed him. When Bill’s military service ended, they returned to Goldendale and together they built the home where they would raise their four daughters.

Marion loved being an active member of her church and community, working many years as a member of the local election board, and voluntarily filling many religious assignments. For a time she worked as an Avon representative and won several sales awards and many times was asked to travel as a speaker or to work as an area manager, but she would always decline such honors, as they would require her to spend large amounts of time away from her family. From 1968-69 she, with her husband and daughters, published The Columbia Journal, a newspaper for which she filled a variety of roles ranging from field reporter to editor. Above all though, her favorite job was working from home as a mother and later, grandmother. A loving sister, wife, mother, and grandmother—she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband Bill McCardell; brothers Willis and Glenn Beers; sister Anna Mae Butkus; four daughters Patsy (Dave) Alldredge of Maple Valley, Wash .; Cindy (Ken) Curfman of Yakima; Donnie (Jim) Zeller of Auburn, Wash .; Debbie (Mike) Dempsey of Buckley, Wash .; 21 grandchildren, Micah, Nathan, Aaron, Daniel, Matthew, Bonnie, Andrew, Samuel and Molly Alldredge, April Stoker, Dale and Jeff Curfman, Kelsey Norman, David, Suzy, Jessica and Katherine Zeller, Alicia, Mary, Jina and Jon Dempsey; and 16 great grandchildren, Addison, Taylee, Ammon, Noah, Isaac, Joel, William, Emberly, Eli, Ashlynn, Riley, Kendell, Graham, Parker, Jasper, and Jensen.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Goldendale. Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
