KPUD raises rates, announces layoffs

Last Wednesday, Aug. 29, the Klickitat PUD announced four layoffs as part of its plan to cut up to $800,000 in expenses.

One supervisor, one engineer, and two administrative positions were terminated. In addition, the PUD will seek to have no new salary increases in 2013.

“This was very difficult,” PUD General Manager Jim Smith said Wednesday.

The total internal impact of the layoffs will be $465,000, Smith said.

Members of the community met with the PUD board of commissioners and staff at a public hearing Tuesday evening to debate, ask questions, and discuss a pending rate increase.
