WORKING ON THE BASICS: Bickleton volleyball coach Katie Leuthauser at work on passing drills with her team. The new Pirate coach says she is working on the basics with the young team.

If a team can take on the personality of their coach, then expect the Bickleton volleyball team to be full of youthful optimism and a willingness to take risks to accomplish their goals. New at the helm this year is Katie Leuthauser, a young woman from New York who chose Bickleton as the place to start her life of adventure, 3,000 miles from the place she used to call home.

Leuthauser was hired last year to be the science teacher at Bickleton. She helped out some with basketball and track as she got acquainted with the school and the students.

Leuthauser isn’t a volleyball fanatic who has spent her life working on the finer points of volleyball. Oh, she played the game in high school, b...
