Kudos to historical society for military road tour

If you hear that the Klickitat County Historical Society is going to have another ‘Military Road’ bus tour, you might want to consider going. We went on last Saturday’s tour which was certainly a historical learning experience.

In 1856 the U.S. government upgraded what was a trail to accommodate wagons for the building of Fort Simcoe in the Yakima Valley. This Military Road between Dallesport and Fort Simcoe became the first wagon road in the valley of the Little Klickitat. Some of the sights we saw during the six hour tour over many dusty gravel roads were portions of the wagon trail with ruts still visible, the Columbia Hills viewpoint, the Warwick Kiosk, the Finlander settlement...
