Oct. 3: 1949—Dumont TV debuts that memorable hit, Captain Video and His Video Rangers. 1991—Steffi Graf sets a record when she becomes the youngest woman to win 500 pro tennis matches. Born: Character actor from Spokane, John McIntire (1907). Died: The producer of many James Bond films, Alberto Romolo “Cubby” Broccoli (1996). Cut Out Dissection Month.

Oct. 4: 1927—Guyton Borglum begins sculpting Mount Rushmore. 1957—The USSR launches Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, resulting in the Space Race and movement to increase math and science classes in schools. Died with his hooves on: Secretariat (1989). National Frappe Day.
