Timberwolves play Highland even for a half before suffering third league loss

SWARMING TO THE BALL: Goldendale mobbed the ball at times against La Salle to disrupt the Lightning offense.

Goldendale lost two matches last week and played Granger on Tuesday, completing the half way mark in league play, although Saturday’s match with Cle Elum-Roslyn was cancelled.

The Wolves were in full defensive mode against La Salle, one of the top teams in the state. With the middle fielders collapsed to help out against the sharp-passing Lightning, there was little support to mount an attack on the few occasions that the ball passed the mid-field line. With the game played on Goldendale’s half of the field, goalie Dallas Smith managed 14 saves but allowed three goals in each half for a 6-0 loss.

At Highland, the Wolves played a close game with the Scotties, going into the second half with the score tied at 1-1 with goals at 13 minutes from Highland’s Caitlin Long and the tying goal at 25 minutes from Cheyenne Smith with an assist from Nicolle Seward. Ten minutes into the second half, Highland scored the game winner and tacked on three more goals for good measure, the last coming at the 79 minute mark for a 5-1 win.
