25 Years Ago – October 15, 1987

• Goldendale’s City Council has voted to contract a forestry consultant to complete a management study on the timber covered city watershed located in the Simcoe Mountains, 13 miles north of town. Currently, Goldendale’s drinking water is collected from nearly 160 tapped springs, which are channeled into one main conduit, flowing to town under the force of gravity. The spring water is doctored only with a dose of chlorine between the mountains and the faucet.

Terence O’Connor, city manager, recalled an effort made on the recommendation of an engineer to drill straight into the mountain. Crews drilled 90 feet, coming up with dust.
