Final tune-up for runners, Districts on Thursday

SETTING THE PACE: Will Bowdish leads the pack through the first 500 yards of the 5k race at Zillah.

Will Bowdish said he was surprised as he led 26 runners through the first half mile at the cross country meet in Zillah, last week. The senior runner from Goldendale might be selling himself a little short. Yes, he was eventually run down by a pack of Zillah Leopards and race winner Ramon Bravo, of Wahluke, but Bowdish has steadily improved in his four years at Goldendale and finished ninth in his best time for the 5,000 meters this year, a 19:01.

Bowdish will be the top runner among Goldendale’s boys who will compete for one of 15 spots out of the District 5 meet at Apple Ridge, in Cowiche, Thursday. Others who competed at Zillah were David Gunkel, 16th, Matthew Blomquist, 17th, Mich...
