Miriam (Hintz) Teal

May 23, 1927 – December 5, 2012

Miriam Teal passed away surrounded by family on Dec. 5, 2012 in Goldendale, Washington.

She was born Miriam Hintz on May 23rd 1927 in LePont, Saskatchewan, Canada. Her family had a strong German heritage and lived in several small communities in Canada and North Dakota where Reinhold, her father, served as a Lutheran minister and her mother, Ida, worked as a schoolteacher. Miriam graduated from Fairview Nursing School in Minnesota as a Registered Nurse in 1948. She married Richard “Dick” Teal on May 23, 1948 and had four children together. Jeff and David were born in Minnesota where the family lived until 1951. Dick’s profession as an air-traffic controller brought the family to Alaska, the birthplace of Roger and JoAnne. After twelve adventurous years in Alaska the family returned briefly to Minnesota, then moved to Hawaii in 1969. Nineteen years later, in 1992, they moved to Goldendale, Washington. Miriam not only lived in many diverse places, she also loved to travel and especially enjoyed trips to Europe, the Holy Land, Australia, and New Zealand.

Miriam loved singing in the church choir and was an active member of the Lutheran congregation wherever the family resided. Favorite past-times of hers included reading, crossword puzzles, and running long-distance races. Miriam also possessed a passion for nature, specifically a love of flowers and was a Master Gardener. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker who truly embodied the expression “home is where the heart is.” Her essence of grace and elegance will always be carried in our hearts.

Miriam is survived by her husband Richard Teal of Goldendale, Washington and children Jeff (Deborah) Teal also of Goldendale, Washington; David (Sally Saddler) Teal of Juneau, Alaska; Roger Teal of Knoxville, Tennessee; JoAnne Teal Craig of Juneau, Alaska; her hanai daughter Lynne Witte; her brother Luther (Mary) Hintz of Ventura, California. She is also survived by her grandchildren Chris Jensen, Matt Jensen, Sharla Jensen, Annessa Hand, Jessica Teal, Tally Teal, Carly Craig, Nathan Teal, Kevin Craig, Kristin Witte, and Lisa Witte, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great-grand children.

She was preceded in death by parents Reinhold and Ida Hintz, brother Ernest Hintz, sister Gertrude Mische, brother Harold Hintz, and sister Idalia Hintz.

Miriam will be greatly missed by family and friends from all over the country.

A memorial service was held on December 8th 2012 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale, Washington.
