25 Years Ago – December 31, 1987

• A new IRS regulation requires every child older than age 4 to have a social security number. If an exemption is claimed for a dependent child on the parent’s 1987 income tax return, and no social security number is listed for the child, IRS will disallow the exemption. In 1987, the exemption is worth $1,900. In every case, proof of age and identity must accompany the application. Acceptable evidence is a birth certificate plus a school report card, student body card, a recent doctor’s billing showing the child’s name, or some other current document that refers to the child.
