State’s recycling effort hit met goal first time in 2011


Washington state’s recycling rate grew to its highest level ever, reaching 50.7 percent in 2011, according to data reported recently by the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology). This is the first time the recycling rate has topped the 50 percent goal set by a 1989 Washington state law. It amounts to about 3.64 pounds per person per day, more than the amount of waste discarded, which has been at a steady decline, reaching 3.54 pounds per person per day.
