To the Editor:

The article about salmon in the Dec. 26 Sentinel is correct as far as it goes—which isn’t far at all.

In short, the state is on the brink of handing Columbia River salmon to rich sportsmen.

Here’s the deal: for decades, well-funded sporting goods manufacturers and others have tried to kick commercial fishermen off the river. They figured that only sport anglers—not anyone else—deserved to eat Columbia River Chinook.

In the past 20 years, the sports tycoons have tried to convince voters to kick the commercial fishermen off the river—twice in Washington and twice in Oregon. The proposal has been defeated decisively each time, most recently just in November in Ore...
