Goldendale 1888 fire photos sought


On May 17, 1888, The Goldendale Sentinel had to be published from The Dalles.

The newspaper, which has printed every week since its establishment in 1879, got the paper out that week, but its printing plant was burned in the devastating fire of May 13 the same year. The paper had to cross the river to publish after the fire.

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the fire. It completely destroyed six blocks of Main Street from Chatfield Street, on the east to Golden Street, on the west, plus the Methodist church north of the area as well as the Klickitat County court house on the south. These blocks were made up of both businesses and homes of the locals.
