Mary and Don moved to Sawyer, Wash., in 1948. Their oldest daughter, Karen, was born in Yakima in 1949. The family lived near Wapato in the early 1950s before moving to Coos Bay, Ore. In 1953, while living in West Point, Calif., their son, Kenneth, was born. They moved to McKinleyville, Calif., and daughter, Vicki, was born in 1956 and son, Michael, in 1958, both in nearby Arcata.

During all of her travelling, Mary raised her growing family and picked apples and other produce wherever the family lived. In 1976, Don, son Ken, and friend Glen Seward, started Log Processors and Mary worked as the bookkeeper for many years afterward. In addition to being a bookkeeper, Mary owned and ran a second-hand store just outside Goldendale in the 1980s and 1990s. Mary excelled at raising children, grandchildren and livestock.
