Assessor’s Office defends number of appeals

Klickitat County Assessor Darlene Johnson and the Assessor’s Office (AO) have recently come under criticism from many county residents for the number of valuation appeals filed with the Board of Equalization (BOE); confusion around multiple revaluation notices and correction notices sent out within the past year; and what some say is a deficiency in communication between the AO and taxpayers.

The Assessor has set a record for number of department reorganizations - 5 in 2 years. A record number of notices and renotices have been sent out by her office. A person who once thought assessment appeals were a sign of incompetence is now glad so many assessment appeals have been taken to the Board of Equalizations because it gives her the opportunity to correct her mistakes. Well if making mistakes are a source of happiness than the people who voted for the present Assessor must be estatic.
