Bill McCardell

Longtime Goldendale resident John William “Bill” McCardell passed away peacefully at his home, with family at his side on January 25, 2013 following a three year long battle with cancer that he was told would take him within six months when first diagnosed.

Bill was born on April 4, 1926, Easter Sunday, in Wenatchee, Wash., to Henry and Mary Alice McCardell. Eventually the family settled in Goldendale where he resided through his school years. During his high school years he met Marion Beers, his lovely, future bride. Following graduation Bill enlisted in the United States Navy and went to basic training. After his training he was deployed to Pensacola, Florida as a payroll clerk. During his leave he married his high school sweetheart Marion on September 8, 1945. After the wedding he returned to his post in Florida and, a short time after he got there, he received a pleasant surprise; his new bride had followed him all the way from Washington to be at his side.

After the end of the Second World War they moved back to Goldendale where Bill found work at Layman Lumber Co. (which later was bought out by Boise Cascade) as a fork lift and truck driver as well as a lumber grader. He remained employed with them until his retirement in 1991.

Throughout his life Bill loved to work with his hands—fixing, repairing, and building whatever his family needed. He built a house where he and his wife raised their four daughters. There seemed nothing he couldn’t do with his hands, be it woodworking and gardening or sewing and decorating cakes, even cutting hair. His favorite pastime was to tinker with his flame-embossed Volkswagen Beetle.

He was active in his community and served for a time as a city councilman. Throughout his life Bill was a faithful and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions throughout the years.

His neighbor Theresa Babler and his good friend Don Morgan lovingly kept track of him, checking in on his needs several times a week since Marion’s passing in August.

Bill always had a smile and a hug for everyone. He was a warm and loving patriarch of his family who will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years Marion Alice McCardell and his sister Anne Leggate.

He is survived by his sister Jean McDonald of Oregon; his four daughters, Patsy (Dave) Alldredge of Maple Valley, WA; Cindy (Ken) Curfman of Yakima, WA; Donnie (Jim) Zeller of Auburn, WA; Debbie (Mike) Dempsey of Buckley, WA; 21 grandchildren Micah, Nathan, Aaron, Daniel, Matthew, Bonnie, Andrew, Samuel, and Molly Alldredge, April (Stoker), Dale, Jeff, and Kelsey (Norman) Curfman, David, Suzy, Jessica (Huffman), and Katherine Zeller, Alicia, Mary, Jina, and Jon Dempsey; and 19 great-grandchildren, Addison, Taylee, Ammon, Noah, Isaac, Joel, William, Emberly, Eli, Ashlynn, Riley, Kendell, Graham, Parker, Jasper, Jensen, Olivia, Emma, and Brennan.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Goldendale. Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
