Trude Gustafson



Trude Gustafson was born January 24, 1920 to Victor and Hulda (Rappako) Lehto at Battle Ground, WA (Gravel Point. She passed away February 6, 2013 at age 93 in Vancouver, WA.

She was the second child of 16 children and the eldest daughter. During her teen and young adult years, she spent many hours caring for younger brothers and sisters. She married her neighbor, Fred Gustafson in 1940 and they spent most of their 54 years of marriage on the home place where she was born. She was an avid gardener, loved to read, and discovered oil painting late in life. Trude was always ready to help a neighbor or friend. She drove great distances to take family and friends to medical specialists or college orientation or to visit the lonely. She was a lifetime member of the Hockinson Apostolic Lutheran Church where her father had been a lay pastor.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred (1994), her parents, an infant son, and 12 siblings.

Survivors include sons, Norm (wife, Jan) of Washougal, Toivo “Vern” (wife, Donna) of Battle Ground, and Ron of Battle Ground, a daughter, Jan (Husband, Wayne) Storm of Washougal, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Dorothy Kay of Otis, Ore., and Neva Wheelhouse of Goldendale, WA; brother, Mervin (Nib) Lehto of Goldendale (who passed away Feb. 15, 2013), and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was Mom, Grandma and Aunt Trude to many extended family members and friends.

A memorial service was held at the Hockinson Apostolic Lutheran Church on Feb. 15.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Ray Hickey Hospice House at 2112 East Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661.
