Thea Smith fifth at State swimming championships



BACKSTROKE: Thea Smith leaves the starting blocks in the backstroke competition. Smith qualified for six events at the State championship competition and had three top 10 finishes.

Thea Smith placed fifth in the 25 meter freestyle at the State Championship swim meet in Springfield, Ore. The 8-year old Goldendale swimmer had three top 10 finishes in the her age division. In addition to the fifth place finish, Smith was ninth in the 100 meter freestyle, dropping 6.72 seconds off her best time, and 10th in the 50 meter freestyle. She also competed in the 25 meter backstroke (17th), 50 meter backstroke (19th) and 50 meter buttefly (19th). Earlier this year, Smith won the 50 meter freestyle in a Mt. Hood meet and she topped the field in the 200 meter freestyle in a Vancouver meet.
