Time to save the medical bull



There’s a story in Hindu lore of a god who turned himself into a bull, then forgot that he wasn’t really a bull. He went on doing bull things, having bull sessions, feeling altogether very bullish (this is absolutely as far as we will go with this metaphor), and feeling not at all godly. The other gods, chuckling over this together at a Starbucks one day, decided they had to intervene and turn the poor guy back into a god.

This story gets a lot of mileage as a metaphor for a lot of different conditions in everyday life, and we will press it into service now as a metaphor for the medical field. Medicine as a line of work started out as quite a benign and magnanimous thing, as of course...
