50 Years Ago – April 4, 1963

• Chief Gus George, 57, head of the Rock Creek subdivision of the Yakima Indian Nation since 1955, died in a fire at Roosevelt last Friday. Funeral rites were held at Rock Creek. He was born in the Rock Creek area Sept. 14, 1905. He was well known as an Indian dancer, and held a vast store of knowledge about the history of the “river people,” including his tribe, the Kah Milt Pahs. He succeeded Chief Wm. Yallup as titular head of the tribe by election, following Yallup’s death in 1955.

75 Years Ago – April 7, 1938

• A skeleton of undetermined age, believed to be that of an Indian, was unearthed by the point of Bud Oldham’s plow from a shallow...
