Francis Lee Sanders

May 3, 1928-March 24, 2013

Francis Lee Sanders, known as Sandy to his friends and family, was born May 3, 1928 to Francis and Anna Sanders in Inglewood, California. He lived in Southern California until his enlistment in the Army in 1946 where he was stationed at Fort Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He served our country faithfully throughout the rest of World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged by Harry S. Truman on January 4, 1956.

Sandy met his sweetheart and the love of his life, Wanda Joyce Norfleet, after the end of World War II, and they were married August 18, 1950 shortly before the deployment of his reserve unit to Japan and Korea. This was the beginning of his legacy, starting with the birth of his son, Thomas Lee Sanders in 1951 prior to his return home from Korea. After that they brought into their family three lovely daughters, Rhonda Joyce, Wendy Gay and Dianna Kay. Sandy took providing and taking care of his wonderful family very seriously. He had a very strong work ethic and always provided a stable environment for them to grow up in.

Sandy raised his family in Washington. Most of that time was spent in Goldendale at the ranch be bought in 1963 in Pleasant Valley, which is still owned by the Sanders Family to this day. He worked as a telephone technician until his retirement in 1998 after the death of his daughter, Wendy. He contributed significantly to the development of the town and the community through his work with the phone company and through his service in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sandy and Joyce have dedicated much of their time and energy to those in need. Their generosity has been endless.

In 2009, he became sick and the family decided that he and Joyce needed additional help and moved them to Kennewick to live with Dianna and Tim Winters, their youngest daughter. He spent the rest of his days in their home and attended church as frequently as he was able. In October of 2012 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and was put on hospice care at that time, but really did not need that service until the last couple of months. He was strong, valiant, tenacious, and never complained. Always continuing to do all he could for his beautiful sweetheart up until the last week before he returned home to his Heavenly Father on March 24, 2013 at 12:02 P.M. at home with his wife, daughter Dianna, granddaughter April, and son-in-law Tim Winters.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and daughter Wendy Gay Smith. He is survived by his sweetheart, Wanda Joyce (Joyce), his sister Marjorie Blackburn, children Thomas Lee, Rhonda Joyce and Dianna Kay, along with 16 amazing grandchildren and 42 spectacular great-grandchildren, and seven fabulous great-great-grandchildren, with more to come. The legacy continues! Stay tuned! The Sanders Saga will continue! His actions and life have a long ranging effect through eternity. We all love you and miss you till we meet again.
