Retha Rometa Crooks



Retha Rometa Crooks passed away in Hood River on March 30, 2013 at the age of 71.

She was born to Algea Hugh Rice and Juanita (Groutte) Rice in Jay, Oklahoma on June 9, 1941. At the age of fifteen Retha moved to California. She met Richard Daniel Crooks and the couple married in Ventura, California in 1957. They lived in San Bernardino and the north Seattle area before settling in Klickitat in 1975. Along with raising her children, Retha worked for several businesses over the years including Underwood Fruit, Mt. Adams Nursing Home in Goldendale, as a subcontractor for Boeing and as a police matron. She loved painting ceramics, gardening and fishing.

Mrs. Crooks is survived by her children and their spouses Brentt and Lisa Crooks of Bozeman, Montana, Brett and Cindy Crooks of Mosier, Oregon, Bretta and Melvin Curtis of Klickitat, Briantt and Lori Curtis of Lewiston, Montana, Richard and Kelly Ann Bartleson of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Shannon and Troy McKay of Vancouver, Washington; brothers Michael Rice of Plano, Texas, David Rice, Danny Rice and John Rice all of Everett, Washington, Steven Rice of California; sister Susan Rice of California; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dan Crooks in 1996, grandson Dylan Johnson and great-granddaughter Alana Lysiak.

A memorial gathering for Mrs. Crooks will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at her daughter Bretta’s home at 1123 Highway 142 in Klickitat. Gardner Funeral Home handled cremation arrangements.
