Pirates boys win team title at Boardman meet

Peter Clinton had a dream meet at Boardman, on Saturday, in fact it was just short of perfection. Clinton led the Bickleton boys to the team title in the Columbia River Invitational by winning three events and placing second in his fourth event. Clinton set personal records (PR) in three sprints, winning the 200 meters in 24.5 seconds and the 400 meters in 54.4 seconds. He was second in the 100 at 11.93, his first race under 12 seconds. Clinton’s fourth win and only one short of a PR was his 12-foot winning jump in the pole vault.

Freshman Nathan Powers also had a strong meet, winning the 110 meter hurdles in a PR 17.58 and finishing second in the 300 meter hurdles and high jump, both setting personal records. Powers cleared 5-6 in the high jump to finish in a tie with his brother, Mitchell Powers. Mitchell also scored points in the triple jump, finishing fourth at 35-2.

The Pirates’ only other win came from Taylor Brown, who was first in the 300 meter hurdles at 46.16. Brown was second in the 110 meter hurdles at 17.98.

The Lady Pirates placed third in the meet with Lindsay Brown scoring a pair of wins in the 100 meter hurdles and high jump. Brown’s 17.55 was a PR in the hurdles and she jumped 4-10 in the high jump. Brown also had good finishes with a second place finish in the 300 hurdles in 54.82 and fourth place in the long jump with a PR 14-3.

Jamie Venema was the runner-up in three events, 200 meters (29.5), high jump (4-8), and triple jump (30-6.75). Shaylee Tharp also contributed to the girls’ score with a second place finish and PR jump of 6-6 in the pole vault and fourth place in the 400 meters, also in a PR 1:15.09.
