Goldendale’s 1888 Fire

May 13, 1888 was the date set for the Strawberry Festival and picnic at the R.C. Coombs place east of Goldendale. Many of the towns and surrounding area residents were in attendance.

Meanwhile, in town a fire had started in a box stall at the Dickson Livery Stable. James Dickson was sitting in the office of the stable, upon hearing a roaring noise, he ran out to discover that the barn was on fire. He hastened to the back of the barn to seize a bucket of water and threw it on the fire almost extinguishing it. He then went for more water, but before he returned the flames had climbed to the top of the building and ran through the entire length; he dropped the bucket...
