50 Years Ago – May 16, 1963

• The 1963 Cattlemen of the Year, Bill and Maxine Ownby, operate a 6,500 acre commercial cattle ranch. Bill got started in the cattle business in 1930 by trading a 1929 automobile for 18 cows. He has replaced his original cattle with purebred Herefords and has 12 cows, 89 yearlings and five registered Hereford bulls. The cows and calves are moved to summer range in the Simcoe’s about July 10, and in the fall they are brought back to the ranch. In May, the yearlings go on to irrigated pasture at Ellensburg where they are sold in September.
