Goldendale wheat faces heat challenge, GMO scare


In a world of agricultural uncertainties—heat, drought, rain, markets—Goldendale-area wheat farmers swapped one worry for another in the past few weeks.

First, there was a knee-buckling drought, and then came a possible customer boycott because of outlawed genetic manipulation.

Dry: Coming in to mid-May, dryland farmers were deeply worried. Spring had been dry.

“It was bad, really bad,” said Shirley Pence, manager of the Mid Columbia Producers store in Goldendale. “A lot of guys were thinking they might not even get a crop this year.”

That means wheat fields could be so sparse that it wouldn’t pay to fire up the combine.
