Goldendale grad won't be deterred

TRANSCENDING TRAGEDY: Maraiya Kitchen is turning a string of tragic events into positive focus.

“Instead of letting tragedy define you, let it empower you.”

These might well be the words listed on the cover page of a popular self-help book or the mantra of a well-paid psychologist. But they aren’t, not at all; these are the words of 2011 Goldendale High School graduate Maraiya Kitchen, who has suffered enough for everyone in her hometown several times over but refuses to be defined by it. She has cause to be derailed, mourning, and overwhelmed, but instead she is harnessing her emotions and letting them produce the fuel for her academic and personal goals.
