50 Years Ago – June 20, 1963

• Gregory McEwen, 15, sustained severe injuries to the right hand in a baling accident Saturday night at the Allen Counts farm. The attending physician said the lad, son of Mr. and Mrs. PT McEwen, would have almost normal use of the right thumb, but all of the four fingers were severed between the first and second joints. One finger was also fractured. The accident occurred about 2:30 a.m., and the power was off, according to previous warning, from 2 until shortly before 6 a.m. The lad was brought to KVH, and nurses, unable to reach the doctors by telephone, went personally to summon the physician from home.
