Cora "Corky" Smith



Cora Lovina Smith was born Oct. 19, 1911, in Hermiston, Ore., to William Harry and Minnie Nancy (Burlew) Browning.

She died June 23, 2013, at the age of 101, in The Dalles, Ore.

The sixth of 10 children, Cora was raised in Baker City and LaGrande Oregon. She attended school until the ninth grade in LaGrande.

She worked as a grocery clerk, fruit packer, homemaker, waitress and as a meat cutter’s assistant. She also spent 23 years as an Avon Representative in Cove, Ore., and Goldendale. She spent the last 35 years in The Dalles.

Cora was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Baker City, at the age of 12. She last attended the Gateway Presbyterian Church in The Dalles, when she was able.

Her favorite things were laughter, she felt it was good for you; she loved dancing!!; cooking, crocheting, knitting, raising flowers and being a Red Cross volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband Clair F. Smith and all her siblings; her son Lyle Smith and grandchildren Barbara Vader and Scott Smith.

Survivors are three daughters: Bernadine and Homer Kesterson of Forks, Washington, Evelyn Vader of Goldendale, and Nelda and Ron Yarnell of Baker City, Ore .; one son Darcy Smith of East Wenatchee; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 36 great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at the family plot in Cove, Ore.
