Military Road tour features lots of history and stories

HISTORY RECOUNTED: Luann Whitmire, whose great- great- great-grandparents operated a trading post nearby, tells their story to the crowd Saturday in front of the Military Road kiosk at Blockhouse.

The Klickitat County Historical Society (KCHS) drew back the curtains from a window into the past this last Saturday with its second Military Road Tour, back again from last year by popular request. The tour wiped the calendar of 158 years, taking a group of 44 people back to the year 1855, undoubtedly one of Klickitat County’s most tumultuous.

The mid-19th century found white settlers streaming by the thousands into a region thick with tension between newly arrived immigrants and the natives that had populated the area for thousands of years. The Whitman missionaries had been recently massacred near Walla Walla, to the east, and the U.S. Army was finding itself slow to match its north...
